New Publication Highlights Public Benefits of ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø Higher Education

ADELPHI, Md. (February 29, 2008) - A new publication has just been released which highlights the contribution of ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø's public and independent colleges and universities to the public good, quality of life, and economic strength of our state and the nation. Titled ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø's Colleges and Universities: United for Our Future, the booklet represents the culmination of a three-year initiative to raise awareness of the ways that all sectors of higher education in the state-public, independent, and community colleges-create "Solutions for ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø's Future."

The initiative began in 2006 with an opinion poll measuring public perceptions of higher education followed by a listening tour in fall 2006 and spring 2007. The listening tour provided a forum for the business community to dialogue with leaders and representatives from the state's public and independent four-year colleges and universities, community colleges, and the ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø Higher Education Commission. The tour was conducted in collaboration with the ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (DLLR) and the Governor's Workforce Investment Board (GWIB). At each event, business leaders offered their assessments of how higher education can respond to the workforce and economic development needs of their regions.

Armed with this input, ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø's colleges and universities, public and private, are better equipped to respond to the needs of the state, support and grow our knowledge-based economy, and enhance the quality of life for all ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø citizens.
