Charles R. "Chuck" Middleton, vice chancellor for academic affairs for the ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø (ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø), has been appointed president of Roosevelt University, effective July 1.  Middleton will succeed Theodore L. Gross, who is retiring. 

 

"Roosevelt University made a great choice," said ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø Chancellor Don Langenberg. "I'm familiar with Roosevelt from my time in Chicago.  Chuck Middleton's extensive experience as a professor and academic leader is an ideal match with Roosevelt's tradition and aspirations.  I know that his many friends throughout the ϡȱÁÔÆæÍø will miss him and wish him the very best." 

 

"Chuck Middleton has a proven track record of academic accomplishments, administrative leadership, and the ability to confront new challenges facing higher education," said Roosevelt Board Chairman James J. Mitchell III. "We are certain he will lead Roosevelt University toward greater academic excellence and, at the same time, become an important civic leader in metropolitan Chicago."

Roosevelt University, a private, nonsectarian university with comprehensive campuses in downtown Chicago and northwest suburban Schaumburg, Illinois has 7,500 undergraduate and graduate students.  Founded in 1945, the university is named after both Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt and is one of the nation's first institutions of higher education to admit all qualified students regardless of race, religion or gender.  U.S. News and World Report ranks Roosevelt as the most diverse private university in the Midwest.

 

Middleton has been in his current position since 1999. As vice chancellor for academic affairs, he is responsible for policy development in faculty affairs, information technology, research, graduate education, and student affairs.  Middleton was provost and vice president of academic affairs at Bowling Green State University in Ohio from 1996 until 1999.  Prior to joining Bowling Green, he was dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Colorado in Boulder for eight years. 

 

Middleton is a magna cum laude graduate with honors in history from Florida State University. He also earned a M.A. and Ph.D. from Duke University.
